Would you consider yourself tech savvy? While teens may be scrutinised for being glued to their screens, it’s true that people of all ages use social media apps. Whether that be planning a Friday night out or posting your latest holiday pics, having the ability to speak to a whole new network of people with just a reach into your pocket is allowing social media to dominate the app stores.

An interesting discussion came up at Approach HQ recently, around which social media platform people use most in their personal lives. With new members of the team, Serena and Finley, it made us think… How do generations’ favourite social media platforms differ? And, are our most popular apps changing?

You’re probably thinking Millennials (Britney Spears and Destiny’s Child generation) are checking social media more than anyone else, however the stats show that it might be the Baby Boomers (more like the Elvis and The Beatles generation) that are most active!

Facebook is far beyond the most popular app. It was founded in 2004 and 15 years later has over 2 billion active users. Considering the worlds current population is 7.7 billion as of July 2019, that’s nearly a quarter of the population on Facebook!

Baby Boomers use Facebook the most, followed by Generation X (think the Blondie and Jackson 5 generation) and finally the Millennials. But why is this? Potentially because younger generations tend to divert their attention across several platforms, whereas people aged 50+ may feel comfortable using Facebook more than any other platform.

Snapchat is increasing in popularity and has managed to grasp the attention of 190 million daily users with photos that disappear within seconds! Only 7% of Baby boomers check Snapchat daily compared to 53% of Millennials. Preferences for certain social media apps clearly differ by age group. Millennials remain invested in Snapchat’s personalized content whilst Baby Boomers and Generation X seem to be less open to new and emerging social media networks.
