When I began working at Approach I had little more than 2 weeks of PR experience and felt like a little bit of a fraud.

Six months down the line and I can now sell-in a press release, secure media coverage across the country, plan a social media campaign, write copy for a variety of clients and have even had a very successful stab at press photography.

In short, I’ve learnt a lot and that I put down to the brilliant opportunities that working at a hands-on, tight-knit agency like Approach has provided me.

At Approach, the day typically begins with the entire team reading the papers, checking news sites and all our social media feeds. We identify stories that are relevant to our clients or us and, of course, save any coverage that we have secured (with a ding on the victory bell to boot!).

Following this I typically spend 1-2 hours monitoring and scheduling social media posts for 18 platforms. Creating weekly content planners means I already know what is going out and when; it pays to be prepared!

In addition to forward thinking, monitoring this many social media platforms also requires a degree of responsiveness. Complaints? Queries? Trending hashtags? On it!

Alongside day-to-day social media responsibilities, I have also spearheaded the PR for the Ilkley Carnival. This requires writing weekly press releases, organizing photos and even taking them, launching social media campaigns and writing copy for the programme.

I also compile coverage books for clients, put together media audits and liaise with bloggers and journalists. All in all, no two days are the same at Approach and everyday requires an equal amount of organisation and fast-thinking to succeed.

Highlights: contributing creative ideas to a new client pitches. Some weren’t successful and some were (keep your eyes peeled).

Lowlights: working on The Grove with the sun shining in through the windows and the crowds outside queuing up for ice cream is a true test of will.

The need to know: I cannot emphasise enough how quickly I’ve had to learn the ropes of PR but with the support of Approach, this hasn’t been daunting, just a challenge.

What I’ll miss: the APR team, Freddy and Connie the office pups and the variety that each day brings.
